Dear Gersig-List-Readers
During the last few weeks I read a few translations of vital records
from German to English on the wonderful "view-mate"-platform.
There was one quite typical mistake which I would like to clarify:
The German word "evangelisch" was mostly translated to evangelical. Yet
it should rather correctly be translated as protestant/lutheran. The
often used translation evangelical would (mostly) describe a rather
fundamentally positioned protestant christian church based solely on
literal interpretation of the bible. To find out, which specific church
was visited, it would then be necessary to research the local church
records.
Though there is also a long history of evangelical churches in Germany,
they are and have been rather a small fraction (under 10%) - most
protestant congregations belong to the "Evangelische Kirche Deutschland"
