A relative of mine came to the US >from Poland in 1939 and stayed with
my American family during World War II. He worked for 7 years for a
family business. In 1946, he left the States and joined his daughter
in Palestine and he remained in Israel until his death. His Israeli
grandchildren tell me that he received Social Security checks >from the
US. This surprised me. Can anyone illuminate me on how Social
Security worked for resident aliens in the 1940s? My relative was in
the States initially on a tourist visa, which he extended several
times, and then starting in 1943 on an immigration visa. Would he
have been eligible for Social Security for his entire stay, including
the time he was here on a tourist visa? Thanks.
