JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Seeking descendants of Samuel & Esther NAJFELD/NEIFELD/NIEFIELD, New Jersey or Philadelphia #general

Apollo Israel <apollo@...>

I have been looking for what feels like forever for some relatives of my
late grandfather's who went >from Poland (Lodz or Kaluszyn) to the U.S. at
some time before World War II. I have been utterly stuck until now because
we did not even know their names. The only information we had was >from some
photos that were sent to my grandfather >from the U.S. in the late 1940s or
early 1950s, which state only, "This is Chanele's daughter Fraidl," and
"This is Chanele's son."

However, I now believe that, at last, I have a real clue. In 1901 in Lodz, a
Szulem Berek NAJFELD married an Estera KASZKIET, who was the younger sister
of my grandfather's grandmother. This couple then disappear >from the Polish
records. However, Ellis Island records show that a Schulem NEIFELD, age 22,
arrived in New York in 1905, and an Ester NEIFELD, age 25, and Chana
NEIFELD, age 3, arrived in New York together in 1906.

The 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses list two couples with similar
names and similar ages, one in Philadelphia, and the other in Passaic
County, New Jersey. In Philadelphia are Samuel and Esther NEIFELD/NEWFIELD,
along with (at various stages) children Sadie, Joseph, David and Evelyn. In
New Jersey are Samuel and Esther NEIFELD/NIEFELD/NIEFIELD, along with (at
various stages) children Annie, Louis, Fred and Murray.

I think it's likely that Szulem/Schulem became Samuel and that Chana became
Annie, and that most likely the New Jersey family were our relatives, but at
this stage I'm not ruling out the Philadelphia family.

There are/were a lot of people with this surname in the U.S., and I can't
figure out who is connected to whom, so I thought it would be easier to ask
if anyone out there in JewishGen/JRI-Poland-land is related to, or knows of,
either of these families and can put us in touch with one another so that we
can compare notes. If you can help, I would be overjoyed and tremendously
grateful!

Thanking you in advance and hoping to hear >from someone,
Miriam Bulwar David-Hay,
Raanana, Israel.
