JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen German-language term: "Regalien-pachter" #general

Hi,

This term appears in the 1891 Trade Directory of Hungary
(I am asking in H-Sig, too...)

I am trying to get a precise definition... in the Directory there is
only one person like this in each town. My understanding so far is that
they were an upper-level govt. official assigned to manage the property
(land and buildings) of the (royal) state, so they would arrange
sub-leasing, perhaps even collect property taxes. Another possibility is
that they purchased the lease for the govt. holdings in a particular and
then sublet to other parties....

Thanks for your help!
