JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen (Canada, UK) Operation Pied Piper WWll Request For Information on Child Evacuees Can You Help? #general

Jan Meisels Allen

During WWll the British government decided to relocate its children out of
urban centers to reduce the risk of bombing attacks and therefore the risk
of children being injured or killed. This was known as Operation Pied Piper.

Millions of people, predominately children were shipped not only to rural
areas in Britain but also to Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and the
United States. Remarkably, almost three million people were evacuated
during the first four days of the operation. The first evacuation started
the day Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 and continued until
September 1944. OT read more about Operation Pied Piper see:

Can You Help?

The reason I am writing in 2015 about what happened 76 years ago is that
there is a Ph.D. graduate student, Claire Halstead, at Western University in
Canada, searching for anyone who knew a child evacuee as part of Operation
Pied Piper. For many of the evacuees, there are no records, no stories, no
narratives to assign following the evacuations. By the time she completes
her thesis, she will have accounted for more than 3,000 children who came to
Canada as part of Operation Pied Piper, of which 1,500 came by way of the
Children's Overseas Reception Board (CORB).

To read more about how to contact her directly and her work which she
hopes will eventually be included in the (UK) National Archives and
in Canada's archives see:

Thank you to Dick Eastman and the Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter for
alerting us to this request for assistance in finding Operation Pied Piper
evacuees.
