Minnesota Jewish Genealogical Society -- April Meeting Announcement
Wednesday, April 15, 2015, 6:30 -- 8:30 p.m. Room# TBA, Sabes JCC
4330 Cedar Lake Road, St. Louis Park, MN 55416
Speaker: Lesley K. Cafarelli
Program: Sorry, Virginia, There Is No Magic Leaf: Building a Solid
Family History through Genealogical Proof and Evidence Evaluation
Popular genealogy TV shows, Ancestry commercials, and online family
trees make it seem that family history research takes little more
than assembling a tree of names and dates by following a quivering
leaf. In reality, building a valid family history takes real
detective work and mental exercise, but produces a defensible and
appealing result full of fascinating stories of human relationships
and courage and the power of family and community ties. In this
session, we'll review two helpful tools used by professional
genealogists -- the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) and a system
for evaluating historical evidence -- that can make every family
historian's efforts more meaningful. The session will include
examples >from the presenter's own research and an activity where
participants will apply these tools and consider how they can help
solve a research problem of their own. A handout and list of
additional resources will be provided.
Lesley K. Cafarelli has researched family histories for 25 years.
She specializes in U.S. and colonial American, Italian, English,
Scottish, and Irish research, and Eastern European Jewish research
in Ukraine, Belarus, and Latvia. Lesley graduated >from Wellesley
College, Brandeis University, and Boston University, where she
earned a Ph.D. in Classical Studies. She headed up programs in
educational and leadership development at the Univ. of MN, the
Minnesota Private College Research Foundation, and The
Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching & Learning,
a national higher education consortium she founded.
There will be a brief administrative meeting prior to our program.
