Saul and Solomon are completely different biblical names, but because
of the similarity of sound, it's quite understandable that sometimes
sol and saul might get confused. Maybe the person didn't like the
full name solomon as much, or maybe there was another solomon in the
family, such as an in-law, where it's customary to avoid the possible
confusion of duplicated names.
So the short answer is most probably yes.

ps. as it happens, there's also a third form of sol, as a common
sephardic female name.
Is Saul (or Sol) a variation or nickname for Solomon?snip...........
