JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Naming laws and practices in Argentina #general

For more than 150 years, the Argentina Civil Code stated that the
father's surname would be that of the child.

It was optional to add the mother's surname which would be added in
second place. This option was seldom practiced.

On Aug. 1st, 2015, a new Civil Code has been applied by which the
parents can choose whether its the father's or mother's surname
which goes first.

Local newspapers announce today several new birth inscriptions already
have made use of the new law.

So, >from now on, that the father's surname is the first in a person
using both, in Argentina, should not be taken for granted.

Hope this helps
