It's been my impression that New York City death indexes designate
out-of-city deaths with the letter Y and a separate numbering
sequence, and that registration of those deaths is required if burial
is to be in New York City.
But I have run into two instances when someone both died and was
buried outside the city, yet is listed in the New York City index. For
example, a death in January 1969 is listed with the certificate number
Y 00033; the grave is at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New
Jersey. Does anyone have any idea why this death would have been
registered with New York City?
