JGSGW February 14, 2016 Meeting Announcement
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington will host its
February 2016 meeting on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 1:00 pm
at B'nai Israel Congregation, 6301 Montrose Rd, Rockville, MD.
Program: 'Exploring the FamilySearch Website'
Speaker: Carol Kostakos Petranek
FamilySearch.org is the world's largest free family history website. It
is the repository of millions of U.S. and foreign records. It also has a
research wiki, a robust family tree, free online classes, and social
media connections. This presentation will give an overview of the FamilySearch
website, how to search its contents, and how to access its many genealogical
resources. Among the resources to be discussed is the Knowles Collection, a
quickly growing, free online Jewish genealogy database linking
generations of Jewish families >from all over the world.
Carol Kostakos Petranek serves as a Co-Director of the Washington, D.C.
Family History Center, where she coordinates classes, conferences and
community outreach projects. She is a Citizen Archivist at the National
Archives in Washington, D.C. and volunteers on the Civil War Widow's
Pension Project and as a Genealogy Aid in the Research Room. Carol is the
Volunteer Coordinator for a FamilySearch/Maryland Archive digitization project of
Probate and Estate Records. She is a Research Specialist in Hellenic
Genealogy, gives presentations on various genealogy topics, and writes
and edits personal and family histories. Carol and her husband, Gary,
reside in Silver Spring, Maryland and are the parents of 4 children and 15
JGSGW Guest Attendance Policy
A non-member may attend the monthly JGSGW meeting as a Guest for a $5.00
fee payable at the sign-in table. The $5.00 Guest fee may be applied toward
payment of annual JGSGW membership dues if dues are paid at the same
meeting at which the guest fee was paid. JGSGW members requiring personal
assistance at a meeting due to a health condition or disability may
bring someone to assist them free of charge.
