JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Reclaim The Records files legal case in NY court seeking the release of the 1930-2015 NYC marriage index #general

Reclaim The Records filed its second-ever court case yesterday, an
"Article 78" legal petition against the New York City Clerk's Office,
seeking a copy of the NYC marriage index for 1930-2015 under the New
York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). The vast majority of
that database has never been available to the public before in any
form or at any location.

The full twenty-five-page legal petition is available online here:

The venue is the Supreme Court of the State of New York, county of New
York (Manhattan). The case's Index number is 100397/2016, although it
is not yet visible in the New York eCourts online system. The City
was served with papers on March 17, 2016, and the first court date is
scheduled for April 7, 2016.

This case is not the same as the one that was filed against the parent
agency of the NYC Municipal Archives last fall, in which Reclaim The
Records won the first-ever release of the 1908-1929 marriage index.
This new case does involve the same kinds of marriage index records,
just many more years of them, up through December 31, 2015. And in
this case, all the records after approximately 1952 are believed to
already be in a searchable database format, which would alleviate the
need for any kind of transcription project, if they are won.
