Possibly a dumb question: my paternal grandfather came >from essentially Gomel, b. around 1875. The family story sometimes says that he was "studying to be a rabbi" - a friend asked me the other day what the educational opportunities **were** for Jews at that time and place? Was there secular education? or was "studying" essential religious?
