JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen (UK) FamilySearch London Centre Microfilms to be Housed at Society of Genealogists #general

Jan Meisels Allen

I recently posted about FamilySearch and the demise of their microfilms and
cessation of borrowing them >from Salt Lake City at some time in the future.
I also mentioned in the UK, that FamilySearch was in negotiations with The
National Archives and the Society of Genealogists as to where to house the
ones that had been temporarily placed at the National Archives. I promised
when more information was known to post that information to this discussion
list.

The Society of Genealogists (SOG) has announced that the London FamilySearch
Centre microfilm collection will be transferring to the SOG in Clerkenwell.
This is partnership between the SOG and FamilySearch and will enable the
microfilm collection to be available to family historians. The London
FamilySearch Centre will continue to provide its research support services
at the National Archives. The FamilySearch collection is about 57,000
microfilms.

The films will be available to view at the National Archives until 31 May
and expected to be available at SOG starting 26 June 2017.

The SOG is a membership organization. Based on what is on their website
regarding visitor fees, http://www.sog.org.uk/the-library/visitor-fees/ one
can safely assume for SOG non-members wanting to access the microfilms, will
be subject to the fees listed on the website. See the website
http://www.sog.org.uk/the-library for more information on how to get there
and Library catalogue.

Thank you to Dick Eastman and the Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter for
posting the notice >from the SOG regarding the new home for the London Centre
microfilms.
