Jewish Genealogical Society (NY) Meeting
Sunday, June 11 at 2 PM
at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th St. New York, NY

Program: "Galician Portraits: The Story of Jews, Gentiles and Emperors"
Speaker: Dr. Andrew Zalewski

The story of Galician Jews is the story of many contrasts: poverty mixed with
opportunity, separateness with acculturation, the sounds of Yiddish and
Hebrew-filled "heders," while German and Polish were spoken in public schools. The
imperial edicts - the laws about Jewish marriages, surnames, secular schools,
military service and land ownership- brought a dizzying pace of changes, but also
plenty of controversies. Coming >from inside the Jewish community of Galicia, more
diverse and vibrant than typically acknowledged, was a wave of the Jewish
Enlightenment and a counterattack by traditionalists. Illustrated with pictures,
maps and historical documents, Dr. Zalewski will discuss his personal genealogical
discoveries within a larger historical context.

Andrew Zalewski is a physician and former Professor of Medicine at Jefferson
University in Philadelphia, where he practiced cardiology. Born in Poland, he has
published two books,"Galician Trails: The Forgotten Story of One Family" and
"Galician Portraits: In Search of Jewish Roots." He serves on the Board of Gesher
Galicia and is Executive Editor of "The Galitzianer."

At 1PM, prior to the JGS meeting, you are also welcome to join the Gesher Galicia
