In response to Michael Garnaud's question about the Eisenbahn, I did a quick
online search, and discovered the following website, for a German museum in
Munich, which shows pictures of early railroad engines, and explains (in
German) their history. One of the first engines shown i "Puffing Billy"
which was built in 1812. The site is:
There are probably more sites with European rail road history but this is
one of the first one I clicked on.
