JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Can LEWITHAN and LOEWENTHAL be versions of the same name? #general

Dear Cousins,

Pat Fuller asked the surname experts in this group whether LEWITHAN
(LEVITAN) and LOEWENTHAL can be different versions of the same surname.

I'm not a surname expert, but based on the different roots of these
names - and some personal experience - my answer is no. LEWITHAN and
its variations signify Levitic origin, and LOEWENTHAL is related to Loeb
and further back to Leib, and then to its Hebrew equivalent Arye, all
meaning 'lion.'
Regards,

Ira Leviton
