Program: Polish Jews: Civilization, Destruction, Tiny Rebirth
Michael Steinlauf is professor of history at Gratz College in Elkins Park.
He is the author of Bondage to the Dead: Poland and the Memory of the
Holocaust as well as numerous studies of Jewish culture in Yiddish and Polish.
He was theater editor of the YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe and
of volume 16 of the journal Polin dedicated to Jewish popular culture in
Poland. His writings have been translated into Hebrew, Polish, German and
Italian. Professor Steinlauf has also been active in various kinds of Jewish
memory work in Poland including serving as chief historical advisor and
curator of modern Jewish culture for the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish
Jews which recently opened in Warsaw. He is currently at work on a study of
the Yiddish writer and activist Y. L. Peretz.
This program is to serve as an introduction of sorts to the 38th IAJGS
Conference on Jewish Genealogy to be held in Warsaw, August 6-10, 2018
This lecture will briefly look at the civilization that Jews built in the
Polish lands before the Holocaust, particularly in the Polish republic of
the interwar years. It will then focus on the complexities of Jewish
revival after the Holocaust, before and since the fall of communism, and to
