IGRA (Israel Genealogy Research Association) has posted two new
articles on its website.

The first article is entitled "Zefat, 16th and 17th Century CE
Epitaphs >from the Jewish Cemetery" by Yosef Stepansky and is in
English.

In recent years, a large concentration of gravestones bearing Hebrew
epitaphs >from the 16th and 17th centuries CE has been exposed in the
ancient cemetery of Zefat, among them are the gravestones of prominent
rabbis, well-known women and disciples of Rabbi Isaac Luria
("Ha-ARI").

In this article, Yosef discusses the history of the research of the
ancient Jewish cemetery in Zefat, including documenting and organizing
information inscribed on the gravestones. In addition, he gives an
in-depth description, including photos, of many of these epitaphs.

Yosef Stepansky is a field archaeologist, researcher and lecturer. He
is a resident of Zefat where his ancestors arrived over 200 years ago.
He has authored four books and more than one hundred professional and
popular articles relating to the Galilee.

The second article is entitled "What's in a Name" by Chanan Rapaport
and is in Hebrew. The English version of this article will be on the
IGRA website near the end of February.

Having always believed that his family name came >from Galicia, Chanan
was challenged with new information that his family name could have
come >from Spain or Portugal. The story of the history of names is
fascinating and will give us all food for thought.

Dr. Chanan Rapaport holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He is
the Director General of the "The Center for the Study of the Rapaport
Family" founded in 1990. Since the death of the famous genealogist,
Dr. Paul Jacobi, he serves as the executor of his scientific estate.
He is a member of the Executive Board of the: "International Institute
for Jewish Genealogy and the Paul Jacobi Center" at the Jewish
National Library in Jerusalem.
