JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen JewishGen Course for Galician Research - Sept 6-28 #general
Phyllis Kramer
Did you have ancestors >from Galicia? Would you like to understand the
resources for researching them? This two part course is designed for those relatively new to Galician research, but know the town of origin. We begin with online town sources, and continue with surname research via vital records using four major websites: Routes to Roots, JRI-Poland, Gesher Galicia and JewishGen. We focus on developing a methodology for foreign research, including: (1) the Family Document containing all the necessary information about your family branch, (2) the Research Table of where you've searched, (3) Your ToDo list, (4) contact list of who is researching your surname or shtetl, and (5) a descriptive paragraph to connect with fellow researchers and professionals. Please note: this course does not include research in US or UK records; you need to know the immigrants name and town >from prior research. Course Material will include an online, downloadable textbook. Galicia II (2020) will cover the historical background, the Polish Archives, over 50 different source websites (census, military, directories etc), Holocaust, languages, hiring a researcher and more! This is a personal mentoring program (unique to JewishGen education) which features an online FORUM where you'll be encouraged to post one ancestral branch (one surname), set goals for your research, and work one-on-one with the instructor to research vital records for your branch, and ask your questions. Our classes have no scheduled times as our students are international, enabling everyone to read/view/post at leisure. Registration is open to 15 students.
