Kehilla #galicia

That was a great discussion on Chassidism....there is a great deal more
to say on the topic >from a genealogical point of view. I drafted a
chapter of a yet-to-be published book for Avotaynu on the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. It took about a year of research and I think
it contains much information that would benefit people with origins in
that region. Unfortunately, the book might never be published but I
have gained permission to share excerpts of the chapter with subscribers
of the GG SIG digest. One aspect of the chapter that is particularly
relevant as a follow up to our exciting discussion on Chassidism is the
role of the Kehilla in Galicia. The political role was huge and it
played an essential role in every aspect of Jewish life. Understanding
how the Kehilla system and Chassidism interacted would, I believe, be
helpful in appreciating the lives that our ancestors lived. This system
ended with WWI. When Poland became independent, the Kehilla system was
disbanded.

I don't have time to write much about this today but I will share what I
learned over the next week or so in small chunks.
