JRI Poland #Poland WW-2 Survivor: Please Help! #poland
In searching Ancestry.com's ship arrivals (free until Dec. 31) I was
stunned to find the name of my mother's nephew, my first cousin, LEJBL
(pronounced 'label') SZEJNMAN, thought to have perished in the SHOAH.
The ship's manifest shows him as having sailed >from the port of Haifa
to New York in 1947! He never found us, and we never found him. Since
he was born in 1910, he is probably no longer alive, but he might have
married and raised a family. Where are they? Can anyone help me locate
his American family?
In putting together the fragments, it would seem that he went to Israel
after the war, hoping to find any living family members there, before
setting sail for the United States. Does anyone in Israel recall his
postwar visit? He would have been in touch with the Bialystoker survivors
in Israel, I'm sure.
Is there any record of his having been there after the war, other than
the ship's manifest? Would a member of Israel-Gen be so kind as to help
by finding any records of his having been there?
I promised my mother, on her death bed, that I would never give up the
search for remnants of our family. I would be so very grateful for any
leads, however far-fetched, that anyone can offer. When I saw his name
on that manifest, my heart broke all over again. He used to carry me
around on his shoulders when I was little (in Bialystok, Poland). He
had the kindest eyes and sweetest smile. Please, dear kind fellow
researchers, help me find his descendants.
B'shalom, Susan PEARLMAN, Northridge, California.
