Jeff Lewy <airbair@...>
I have recently found (in JOWBR) cemetery records at Lotnicza cemetery
in Wroclaw, Poland/Breslau, Silesia/Germany for Berthold/Baruch LEWY
and Jenny/Chava COHN LEWY that I believe are my relatives. He died
in 1918, she in 1933. They are buried in the same plot. However, no
ages or other data were given.
In the Wroclaw BMD records in JRI-Poland I have found a death of
Friedricke LEWY in 1891 (Akt 2659/Fond 1425), and a marriage of Bianka
LEWY in 1900 (no spouse listed) (Akt 900/Fond 1425), both to parents
Berthold LEWY/Jenny COHN.
Based on a family letter, I believe Berthold and Jenny were living in
Breslau in 1914 as well. I have no other information about them.
They may have been born about 1840-60 based on the ages of other
family members of the generation I think they belong to.
All the other members of the LEWY family that I know about emigrated
to the US by 1872, and I have no European records for them. Some of
the emigrants' death certificates indicate that they were born in
Ostrowo, now Ostrow Wielkepolska, Poland.
What other records for Breslau/Wroclaw are available that might help
me find out more about Berthold's and Jenny's lives, offspring and
parents? Are there censuses, directories, other BMD records, or other
records for Breslau available? Was there a newspaper in Breslau that
would have been likely to carry death notices (like the Neue Freie
Presse in Vienna)?
I am sending this email to both the GerSIG and JRI-Poland lists. Any
suggestions are welcome. Please respond privately. Thanks!
