Subject: Seeking "SMOLANKA" Galicia

the Galicia list:

I am trying to determine the present-day name of a village known as
SMOLANKA, which was in the Tarnopol (Ternopil) District and Mikulince
Sub-District of Galicia, located about 10 miles south of Touste and west of
Skalat.
Gundacker's Gazetteer says that Smolanka was in the Mikulince Jewish
District (equivalent of Suzan Wynne's Sub-District) and the Mikulince
Judicial District, as well as the Tarnopol Administrative District. Using
the scanned maps that accompany that atlas, I see that Smolanka was in a
river valley and slightly to the northeast of Mikulince. Using this
observation and playing with the search capability of ShtetlSeeker, I
estimate Smolanka to be at about 49 degrees 26 minutes North Latitude and 25
degrees 44 minutes East Longitude. (It is due north of Terebovlya, and
slightly south of due east >from Kupchintsy.)

This places it about 2 km north of Skomorkhi (formerly Skomorkhy), about 5.6
km north of Sushchin (formerly Sushchyn), about 2 km south of Bovoriv
(formerly Bovorov), and about 10.8 km due east of Mirolyubovka (formerly
Chartoryya).

While ShtetlSeeker does not list a specific place name at or near this
location, it may be that inquiries in adjacent towns would tell you whether
the place name Smolanka is still in use or if the area has been incorporated
into one of those towns. It also occurs to me that, especially as it is on
a river, the town could have been obliterated by a Soviet era construction
project.
