The Katzenellenbogen family was very large and there are a number of
variations on the name that connect back to the family: Kay, Ellenbogen,
Katzen, Bogen, Bogin, etc. Neil Rosenstein's 2 volume book Unbroken Chain
is about this family and their many interconnnections with other families.
The family traces its roots to Rabbi Meir Katzenellenbogen, known as the
MaHaRaM of Padua. He lived in the 16th century. His descendants were
spread throughout Europe, many of whom were among the region's well known
I would strongly advise against trying to connect with a particular branch
of the family in the US on the basis of the name alone. As with anyone
starting out to trace his or her roots, it would be best to go backward, one
generation at a time.
Dr. Rosenstein's book may still be in print. It was published by Shengold
and reprinted about 5 years ago, I believe. He is a physician who lives in
Elizabeth, New Jersey.
