Latvia SIG #Latvia Latvian languages #latvia

My grandmother, Minna TREMPER, came to the USA >from Libau,
Courland, in the 1890s. She told me that the language of
the "peasants" was called "Lettish" and that they were
"Letts". The "cultured", assimilationist Jews identified
themselves with the "superior" Germans and spoke German,
in addition to Yiddish. The Jews did not speak "Lettish"
(Latvian).
