Ava Sweeney asks about the whereabouts of her grandfather's last residence:
Marianopol - as registered in Ellis Island. Ava assumes it is in Lithuania,
says his original last name was LASDAISKY and that he was born near
Although there is more than one place with a similar sounding name,
Marianopol is very possibly Marijampole (Mariampol ), Lithuania, located on
the banks of the Sheshupe river, some 35 miles SW of Kovno / Kaunas, and
about 20 miles in straight line NNW of Lazdijai (the pronounciation by my
father for Lazdijai was very close to Lasdiei or LASDAI in LASDAISKY)
Mariampol is about 20 miles >from today´s Lithuanian-Polish border, near
Suwalki in Poland's NE corner, where four countries almost meet.in two
groups of three: Russia-Poland-Lithuania, and Lithuania-Poland-Belarus.
The district of Marijampole was founded in the former territory of the
Baltic tribe of Suduviai, in the lowland of the river Sesupe. It is a rural
lakes and forest district including the plains of Suvalkija.
Ava mentions cousins in Simnas. Simnas is about 15 miles SSE of Mariampol
and 10 miles NNE of Lazdijai.
Hope this helps,
Buenos Aires, Argentina
