Litvak researchers in the Los Angeles Area are invited to the JGSLA
meeting on Monday, April 24th at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701
N. Sepulveda Blvd.
David and Sonia Hoffman will be speaking on the "Grand Duchy Project:
Finding Families in 18th Century Records in Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and
80% of today's Jews have ancestors who lived in the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. The Hoffmans are translating and analyzing thousands of
pages of census-tax records >from the latter half of the 18th century,
for the areas which are now in Belarus, Lithuania, and parts of Poland
and Ukraine. They will describe information found in these records
about communities (kahals) and families, and present the historical
context for these findings. They will demonstrate how researchers have
identified their families in these records, though they did not yet
have surnames, and will show examples of other types of 17th
and 18th Century records that are available in archives.
