Re: Directories question -- Smorye #galicia

Your Smorye is probably Smorze. In Suzan Wynne's book, Finding Your
Jewish Roots in Galicia, the list of towns where Jews lived in about
1870 lists Smorze Dolny, Smorze Gorne, and Smorze Kolonia. Searching
Shtetlseeker identifies Smozhe at coordinates 4854, 2311, 17.7 miles WSW
of Skole. The records for these towns were registered in Skole. All the
Skole records at the AGAD Archives >from 1877 through 1901 have been
indexed and can be searched by surname at The 1902
and 1903 records are currently being indexed and will be online in a few

After reading Pamela's messages re researching the Directories - I
again for my Grandmother's father's lumber mill. Growing up, I had
many anecdotes about her visits to the lumber yard.

The surnames I checked were AWNER [my Grandmother's maiden surname]
WECHSLER [her Grandfather's surname].
I checked both DM and exact spelling.
The documents which I have in my possession list Lemberg/L'vov as my
Grandparent's home.
The Town listings in the 1891 Galician Business Directory for
[Sawmill] are Smorye and Skole.
I didn't find a reference to either town in Shtetl Finder - I then
found information on Skole [a district town in L'vov] but not Smorye.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I go >from here????

Is researching magnate landowners the next step?

Thank you.
