Florence Schumacher, Boston 2013 Publicity Chair
If you have been waiting to sign up for the special events at the IAJGS
2013 Boston conference, time is running out.
The tours (sign up at www.tours.iajgs2013.org ) are very popular -- filling
up fast and selling out. In response to the high demand, we are pleased to
announce that we are offering a second walking tour of Boston's Old South
End, but we do not have that capability for any of the other tours.
The two bus tours are also filling up. Visit the Touro Synagogue
(www.tourosynagogue.org), America's oldest synagogue and a national
historic site, as it celebrates its 250th anniversary this year. The
curator and archivist of the synagogue's visitor center, David Kleiman,
will travel on the bus with the group to provide background and then will
lead the tour. The Colonial Jewish Burial Ground
(http://www.loebtouro.org/jll_cem.shtml), generally closed to the public,
will be opened especially for our group. Tour Date & Destination: Sunday,
August 4, Newport, Rhode Island.
Visit the Yiddish Book Center (www.yiddishbookcenter.org) which rescued
over a million Yiddish books >from dumpsters around the world as the older
generation of Yiddish speakers passed on and their children could not read
the language of their parents and ancestors. This ongoing campaign has
saved Yiddish literature for future generations and made the widespread
university-level study of Yiddish language and literature possible. It
earned Aaron Lansky, the Center's founder and director, a "Genius Grant"
from the MacArthur Foundation and an invitation to be the keynote speakerat our opening session. Tour Date & Destination: Friday, August 9,
The special events involving meals (sign up at www.meals.iajgs2013.org) --
Breakfasts with Experts, SIG Luncheons, and the Gala Banquet -- have
limited space and a sign-up deadline of July 24. Genzyme is offering a
symposium on Ashkenazi Jewish genetic diseases, with a specially priced
breakfast on Thursday. The banquet on Thursday night features the
outstanding Zamir Chorale (www.zamir.org) of Boston.
The 19 computer workshops (sign up at www.workshops.iajgs2013.org) -- four
using Mac computers -- have very limited space. Subjects range >from Steve
Morse's popular "One-Step Search" tools to Reunion(R) and Family Tree
Maker(R) genealogy software. The hands-on workshops can teach you new
skills in doing research in Bessarabia, Hungary, Lithuania, or Poland or how
better to use the Internet, social media, or JewishGen.
