Lithuania SIG #Lithuania Moving to the City: Urbanization in Vilnius, Trakai, and Belarus #lithuania

Peggy Freedman <peggyf@...>

Those of us who live in cities in America take for granted the great
urban migration of the first half of the twentieth century.I live in
Atlanta, Georgia and a common question to ask when meeting someone is
“Where did you live before Atlanta?”

It is an important thing for genealogists to remember!

We work so diligently to find our “shtetl of origin” that we forget that
our ancestors moved around. The LitvakSIG Internal Passport projects are
documenting the urbanization of Eastern Europe in extraordinary detail.

The Internal Passports for the district of Trakai have just been
translated and made available to qualified donors of the Trakai and
Vilnius Districts.Of the 875 people who received passports in Trakai,
418 were born in the Vilnius district, and 151 were born in places in

A similar pattern of residents born in a rural village receiving an
Internal Passport in Vilnius is demonstrated by the list of birthplaces
in the first 9,000 records that have been translated for the Internal
Passports >from Vilnius. You can see the list of places here:

The LitvakSIG Internal Passports project has translated over 100,000
internal passports for Lithuania. These translations are available on
the District Research Group Shutterfly sites. There are approximately
34,000 Internal Passports that still need to be translated for Vilnius.
These documents are only available at the Lithuanian Archives and are
being translated by a team living in Vilnius. If you would like to
contribute to the project, you can do so at
<>.Choose “Internal Passports” >from
the Special Projects dropdown box and mark Vilnius in the space for Notes.

This data will be made available in LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database
approximately 18 months >from LitvakSIG's receipt of the translations.
