Lithuania SIG #Lithuania Re: Repetition of given names #lithuania

The repetition of a given name as a first name for one child and a
second name for another, or as the second name for two children, was
not unusual among my Lithuanian forebears. One possible reason might
be to double the chances that a particularly important name would
survive to adulthood.

(Childhood mortality was lower among Lithuanian Jews than among
Lithuanians, I have read, but still excruciatingly high: In a set of
death records I downloaded yesterday, 36 out of 53 - 70%! - died by
the age of 5 - and this was in the 1860s in Vilnius, a comparatively
modern city.)
