Just to add some elements to the comments on Ashkenazi Jewish
population, please let me copy my 2001 posting in JewishGen DG
quoting a Sunday Dec 16, 2001 Reuters article:

According to a Sunday 9:14 pm Reuters article, an Israeli geneticist
says modern Ashkenazis came >from an even smaller gene pool than
previously thought.

The article refers to an estimation of 1500 Jewish families - dating
back to the 14th century - being the source for the total Ashkenazi
population today. But it says ├Źsraeli Ariel Darvasi - president of a
pharmaceutical company and geneticist at Jerusalem's Hebrew
University - believes the source of the total (Ashkenazi) population
might have really been only 500 families. Modern Ashkenazi
population is quoted as being "around 10 million".

I saw the article in my AOL News ticker and it may be also found
(not for long, I suppose - I do not know how fast they change this
page) linking to the Science News page from

http://www.reuters.com/

The article explains why this researcher has concentrated research of
genetic links to some common diseases in 10,000 samples >from anonymous and
consenting Israeli Ashkenazi donors.

It mentions the fact that the relative homogeneity of the Ashkenazi Jews'
population - maybe among certain Sardinians, French Canadians, or
Icelanders too - facilitates gene discovery: It is easier to find the
"genetic needle in the human genome haystack" in a homogenous population,
because there are less genetic differences in their DNA.
