My research has has taken a rather convoluted twist now, because I have info
dating >from >from 1830 (undocumented!).

Why should I consider this a complication instead of a success? Well ....
around the 1860's or so, my husband's grandfather was adopted by an ELMAN
family. The story that has been pieced together after years of speaking with
different family branches, is that Yakov Nisan ELMAN - original surname
WAISMAN - was offered a large sum to take the place of an ELMAN son who had
been conscripted to fight in the army. These ELMANs were >from Romania - it
was in Falticeni, Romania that Yakov Nisan died in 1919. He was sent to
Istanbul with his unit, & later lived out his life in Romania.

It seems that, despite the surname complication, they were actually related
to Mischa ELMAN. How do we know about the connection to Mischa? My husband's
uncle (who was very aware of the surname background)found himself next to
Mischa on a flight to or >from New York in the late 50's/ early 60's. They
got around to surnames, & after an in-depth Jewish geography conversation,
came up with the common denominator & learned they were 2nd (*perhaps* 3rd)
cousins. Unfortunately, this uncle has long since passed away & no-one
recorded the information.

Just this week, a cousin in Israel sent me the data >from a photo of Yakov
Nisan's gravestone. It names his father as Zvi Yosef - no surname given.
Under the circumstances, I would assume that HE was the last WAISMAN in his
line, although he must have had brothers whose descendants still retain the
name.

Since the airplane conversation leads to the conclusion that we are related
to ELMAN *in any case*, my guess is that Yakov Nisan was adopted by an
affluent uncle. Now I have to find the link to confirm this hypothesis, &
find the "other" branches of our tree.

Whew!
That's the story folks. Below, is a 3 generation chart dating >from my
"latest addition", Zvi Josef. Any serendipitous leads?
