Scandinavia SIG #Scandinavia New SIG member Re: KOPPENHAGEN family #scandinavia

Martin Fischer

I am a new subscriber to the Scandinavia SIG. I am a moderately
experienced amateur genealogist whose only fluent language is
English. I have been a subscriber to several other JewishGen SIGs
for years, but relatively recently learned of a connection to
Denmark, so I have added the Scandinavian list to my subscriptions.

A researcher in Berlin, Germany, named Lars Menk had seen one of
my previous postings on GerSIG naming some of my ancestors. He
was kind enough to document the following for me:

"At Wongrowitz there was also the family KOP(P)ENHAGEN. The teacher
Michael Leiser KOPPENHAGEN, b. ca. 1794, had moved there >from Copenhagen
(KĂžbenhavn), Denmark before 1825. He taught German, Hebrew and French.
He was married to Dorchen LEVY, b. ca. 1803 in Wongrowitz. Both were living
in Wongrowitz in 1836. He became naturalized Prussian citizen in Nakel
(Naklo nad Notecia) on 11 Aug 1834. He spent the last years of his life
in Breslau (Wroclaw) where he died around 1865. His daughter Martha
KOPPENHAGEN was married to Hermann DAUS(T)"

The Denmark connection was also mentioned in a 1930s document >from the
Landmanshaft of Wongrowitz, Prussia (Wagrowiec, Poland) that I received
from the writer Emily Rose and had translated. A summary of several
prominent members of the group included the following:

"...the teacher M. L. Koppenhagen >from Denmark, who came to Wongrowitz at
the beginning of the 19th century. He taught German, French, and Hebrew,
married a Levy >from Wongrowitz, and spent the last years of his life in
Breslau, where he died in 1865."

I have posted my somewhat limited KOPPENHAGEN family tree at:

I would be interested in learning if anyone knows of any siblings of
Michael Leiser KOPPENHAGEN or siblings of his daughter Martha KOPPENHAGEN
