Sephardic SIG #Sephardim Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Spain and Potential Jewish Genealogy Society #sephardic

Jan Meisels Allen

I am writing wearing my VP of IAJGS "hat". One of the responsibilities of
the IAJGS Membership Development Committee is to look at areas with
significant Jewish populations that do not currently have Jewish Genealogy

The country of Mexico is one area that has a substantial Jewish
population (Wikipedia reports the number of Jews in Mexico at over 68,000,
and over 20,000 in Mexico City alone) but no where in the country are we
aware of any Jewish genealogy society.

Wikipedia reports in that in 2007 the country of Brazil had a Jewish
population about 196,000 in 2007.The two largest populations are in São
Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The previous Jewish Genealogical society appears
to be defunct as the leader died and no one took over the society.

We understand there may be a society in Puerto Rico but have not found
anyone to contact.

It is our understanding that there may be society in Barcelona, but at one
time there was no one to take
on the leadership roles

If anyone is aware of Jewish genealogists in Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico of
Spain-or organizations that
exist that might be interested in sponsoring a society it would be
appreciated if you shared their information with me.

If any of this SIGs readers located in Central or South America are aware of
other countries that do not have a society and believe there is interest in
starting a society please also contact me.

Thank you
