Vittalli >from Istanbul might indicate that an individual would be of Italian origin. Most of the respondents told me about families with surnames of VITTALLI, VITTALI, VITOULIS, and VITAL. I was also informed that the name Vittalli is comparable to Chaim, Haim and Victor, all of which mean life, and all names that my husband's grandfather used at various times. The most helpful information came >from Metin DELEVI who gave me the contact information for Mr. Rifat BEHAR, the president of the Istanbul Jewish-Italian Congregation, who checked his records and told me that he could not find any family in his records with the surname of ALGAZE or ALGAZI. Italian Synagogue - Sair Ziya Pasa Yokusu no 27, Karakoy Galata, Istanbul, Turkey Jewish Italian Cemetery - (Italyan Musevi Mezarligi) # 283 Abidei Hurriyet Caddesi - Sisli - Istanbul - Turkey I was also told by Monica HOLLAND, that the Italian name for Victor is *not* Vittalli, but Vittorio. I learn something new every day. Special thanks to Nardo BONOMI who has done a lot of research on Italian Jews and who is open to all communications regarding the Italian Jewish Community. Thank you, again, to all the members of the Sephardic SIG and to its moderators. Barbara Algaze Los Angeles, California Algaze3@...
