A few years ago on a trip to areas of Ukraine that were formerly
Galicia, I spoke to a man in Stryy and another in Lviv, each of whom
had fled east (one I recall had gone to Uzbekistan), when the
Germans were approaching in order to escape the Nazis. At the end of
the war they returned to their birthplaces and were among a handful
from their towns who had survived. Most of those who did not fleeeast did not survive the war.
There are many stories to be heard and much to learn.
