"Has anyone come across the given name of Shabsha? I haven't found it on
JewishGen's given name database and would like to find some information or
origin of the name. It came >from our great grandfather, and then father."

The Yiddish diminutive is linked to the Hebrew name Shabsay (Ezra
10:15). There are many other similar names which are also derived from
this Hebrew given name, such as: Shabe, Shabse, Shabshl, Shabsl, Shaps,
Shapse, Shapshl, Shepe, Sheps, Shepshl, Shepsl, ....... The Hebrew name
Shabsay also forms a legal double name with several other linked Yiddish
names: Sheftil, Sheftl, and Shepsil. These would be found in Gitin
(Jewish divorce contracts) as Shabsay hamechune (called)
Sheftil/Sheftl/Shepsil, and he would have been called to the Tora in an
aliya as Shabsay Sheftil/Sheftl/Shepsil.

In doing research of Shabshe, Susan should also be on the lookout for all
of these names, all of which could have been used in one archival document
or another.
