<< am researching any townspeople who lived in KATERNOPOL (also
known as KALNIBOLOTO) which is a shtetl / town about 112 miles South of
Kiev. My family left around 1920 (my understanding is that most of the
Jews were killed or forced out by pogroms around the same time)

Any information would be much appreciated. I want to know know more about
the history of the town and locate any photographs.

My old Columbia-Lippincott Gazetteer has an entry for "Katerinopol," or
"Yekaterinpol." The entry doesn't note its former name as "Kalniboloto." In 1926
had a population of 7,567. Known for its metalworks, it is located in the south
Kiev oblast, 37 miles east northeast of Uman.

In addition, my older edition of "Where We Once Walked" says that
Katerinopol is that it had a pre-WWII Jewish population of 1,759. Although this edition
has no separate entry for Kalniboloto, under its Katerinopol entry, it does
note the alternative names "Kalniboloto" and "Piaterota." And it does have a
listing for "Piaterota" which refers to its entry for Ekaterinopol.

My typing in "Katerinopol" in the "google" search engine brought up a page of
pictures taken on a trip to Katerinopol, but all they show are someone's
family members, and a very few show trees and bushes which can be seen almost
anywhere in the world. "Google" couldn't find anything for "Piaterota" but it did
produce a map showing Kalniboloto's location.

I wondered whether Mr. Oster got his surname >from Oster City in the Kyiv
(Kiev) Oblast, but I found an old message of Mr. Oster's which said his family had
changed their surname >from OSTROVSKY which may reflect their origin in the
town of the Ostrov which is located in the province of Kiev.
(There are many towns named Ostrov scattered about Eastern Europe, as I
observed in one of my old responses.)
