Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Re: reasons for name change #ukraine

Carlos Glikson

While referring to reasons behind name changes, there was a mention that
"Once they were outside Russia the Czar's draft could not reach them."

During the presentation of a book about Jewish pioneers in the Argentine
Patagonia, the author said he had wondered about the reasons beyond the
push that took these pioneers so far South, to live in isolated areas,
rough climate and difficult conditions in the early years.

It did not surprise me when he mentioned he thought after research and
interviewing descendants that in some cases they felt "the long arm of the
Czar could reach them in Buenos Aires".

They took a train ticket to the farthest station >from the Port of Buenos
Aires, as far South and away >from the port, and the Czar, as they could
afford.
