presents a special summer event . . .

Heritage Travel and Research
in Ukraine and Beyond with Alex Dunai

Monday, August 7, 2006, 7:00 PM
Activities Room, JCC, Mercer Island, WA

This is a must-see event for anyone interested in Eastern European
genealogy and travel, especially in Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Slovakia,
Romania and Hungary. Alex will provide a general introduction to
genealogical research in these regions, and then he'll answer questions
from the audience.
About Our Speaker

Alexander Dunai resides in Lviv/Lwow/Lemberg, Ukraine. After graduating
from the Lviv State University in 1992 with a degree in history, he
worked for the government-sponsored International Center for Education,
Science and Culture in Lviv.

Alex has worked as a professional genealogical researcher since 1996. He
combines his professional interest in genealogy with his knowledge of
Jewish life in East Central Europe to guide genealogists and travelers
in their quest to connect historically with their ancestors. Due to
consistently high performance reviews by his research clients, he was
invited by JewishGen to be their official liaison for the Western
Ukraine ShtetlShlepper program and has been a JewishGen partner in this
project since 1998. Fluent in English, Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian,
with a smattering of German and Latin — just enough for genealogy
purposes — Alex’s research and roots tours for clients have taken him to
archives, civil registry offices, towns, museums and institutions
throughout Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary. His
close ties to the Lviv Historical Archive, and his knowledge of the
labyrinthian bureaucratic systems in Ukraine, enhance his ability to
negotiate entry to these institutions even under the most extraordinary

Among his contributions to Jewish genealogy are his discovery and
translation of the official KGB martyrs' lists for Galician Jewish
victims of World War II and documentation of Galician Jewish records
held in the Lviv Archive. Alex also works as a consultant to attorneys
in Lviv and as an agent and partner in Ukraine for British title
research company.
