Ukraine SIG #Ukraine RE: Name equivalents #ukraine

Sarah L Meyer

Dear Genners,
There has been quite a bit of discussion in the digest lately that
assumes that there is a relationship between a person's secular name and
the religious one. In my experience with US Jews in my family and
others (>from about 1900 on), that is not necessarily the case. What I
have found is that often a family will name their child after someone
using the religious name, and possibly choose a non related secular
name. The reasons could be that they like the secular name, they are
using this method to name after two different people, they do not like
the equivalent secular name, or they just want the child to have a less
obviously Jewish secular name. Some of these reasons might have been
equally valid in other countries and at other times.
