Sarah L Meyer
I have two suggestions. One is to scan the ketubah centering on the
place and ask for help in reading it, by placing it on ViewMate. With
three alphabets involved not to mention Yiddish and Russian place names,
perhaps another look at the ketubah would be worthwhile.
My second suggestion is to do the search as a two step search. First
since you believe that the town is near Fastov, Ukraine see if you can
locate potential towns by obtaining the coordinates of Fastov (50o05 and
29o55). Then do a search for location using the maximum distance. Look
at all of the towns that come up (several start with S and you might
consider Z or Sz) and see if one of these is likely to be your town. It
will not match by soundex (since neither came up in the Ukraine). You
may find one or both of them this way.

According to a ketubah written in 1897, the couple was married in a
by the name Shamegunke near the city Skalirani".
I have tried ShtetlSeeker and the Shtetl Finder, but for the life of me
I can't figure out what these places might be.
I did find a word skalirani in Google; obviously not a place name.
There was nothing for Shamegunke.
I'm assuming (thought I might be off base here) that it should be in the
vicinity of Fastov as that's where they settled after they were married,
and that's where they had family from. Maybe that will help.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated!
Thanks very much for your help.
