Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Ukraine SIG Official Speaker at IAJGS conference: Dr. Eric Goldman #ukraine

Janette <janettes@...>

Dear Ukraine SIGgers:

I am really excited about this year's IAJGS Ukraine SIG speaker, Dr.
Eric Goldman. Eric will be speaking at a lunch with the experts and
have a session presentation. His session, entitled "Searching for a
Usable Path: Liev Schreiber's 'Everything Is Illuminated'" will be
about Liev Schreiber’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s critically
acclaimed novel is one of the most memorable films of recent time. What
starts out as an expedition to piece together one family's story under
the most absurd of circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful
journey with a powerful series of revelations – the importance of
remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets and the meaning of love and
friendship. Foer, during a summer vacation, went to Ukraine in search of
answers and found nothing. Schreiber lost a grandfather, his only link
to Judaism, who left Ukraine before World War I. The writer and the
filmmaker each uses his oeuvre to explore what connection “the Old
Country” has to their present life. They raise age-old questions that we
often ask in our ongoing search for Jewish identity and
self-understanding. Eric Goldman will explore the film along with the
questions of “post-memory” and the memory-site.

Eric A. Goldman, adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University is the
founder and president of Ergo Media Inc., a New Jersey-based Jewish film
distributor. Dr. Goldman is also film reviewer for Northern New Jersey's
“The Jewish Standard.”

Dr. Goldman is a noted film educator and scholar of Yiddish, Israeli and
Jewish film. Former director of the National Jewish Media Service and
curator of film for the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, Eric was a
member of the Educational Advisory Committee of the USHMM. The
University of Texas Press published his new book, “The American Jewish
Story through the Cinema.”

I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City. Please keep in mind
that we are dependent on contributions to provide funding to bring
speakers to the conferences. Your donation can be made to the Ukraine
SIG General Fund. Choose "donate" on the menu bar of the Ukraine SIG
website. Specify "Ukraine SIG General Fund."
