Andy Monat
Hello,
I'm searching for my MONAT ancestors in Warszawa, and would be grateful to hear >from anyone who is researching that family, and would also like a translation of a document on ViewMate that may be relevant to that family. Shmuel Moshe (aka Samuel or Sam) MONAT, was born in Warszawa about 1849. He was a soldier and lived in Petrozavodsk, Russia. He retired from the army and immigrated to New York City about 1896, where heworked as a plumber and tinsmith. His birth in Warszawa was recorded in an 1893 list of Jews in Petrozavodsk, which said he was 43 years old. According to his death record in New York City in 1903, his parents were "Israel" and "Martha". I have no reason to believe that his parents ever immigrated to the US, so I suspect that Martha was an Americanized version of her Yiddish name, but that she never went by that name. I've posted a record in Polish on ViewMate that might possibly be for a brother of Sam, and I would like a translation: https://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=60956 (please respond on the ViewMate form or privately by email). It is indexed by JRI-Poland as the birth of Josef Hersz MONAT to Izrael and Ryfka Matla on 23-Dec-1847. Perhaps the mother's second name Matla was what was recorded as Martha? Also, if anyone would like to compare DNA results on gedmatch.com, or knows about a connection to the MONATs of Lodz I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Andy Monat Melrose, Massachusetts, USA
