Alex Krakovsky and Ukrainian Archives
Stefani Elkort Twyford
I am Stefani Twyford, President of the Greater Houston Jewish Genealogical Society.
I believe most of you are familiar with the work that Alex Krakovsky is doing in Ukraine. Working with the non-profit Scanners For The Ukraine, he has been providing high quality scanners to archives throughout Ukraine. Ukraine, now a democracy, has opened up its rules about access to records at archive locations. However the ministers in charge of these archives keep throwing up road blocks to Alex and other researchers getting into and copying records from the archives. Alex has, on his own time and money, successfully sued numerous archives but the obstruction continues.
The work that Alex is doing in Ukraine is active research and is absolutely essential to our work as Jewish researchers. Something like 40% of all Jews in the United states are descended from the Ukraine area! Collectively we are remnants of families torn apart by pogroms and war and in some cases many of our researchers don’t even know the names of their own grandparents.
I know we are all busy but it’s essential that we take a moment to support Alex in his stand against the Ukrainian bureaucracy that attempts to thwart him at every step. You can send your email of support to alexkrakovsky@.... Let him know that it is essential to citizens of your country that the records remain open to researchers descended from Ukrainian families.
Here is a copy of the message that Alex posted on Facebook recently:
In gratitude, Stefani Elkort Twyford
