My mother z"l always remembered her father's friend, "Schuster," whose pointer finger had been cut off "long ago, so he wouldn't be taken into the army" in Galicia. She knew Schuster when she was a child in New York Cityin the 1910s and 1920s, and she always shuddered when she saw him.
