The March Issue of the Galitzianer #galicia

Gesher Galicia SIG

We are delighted to release the March 2020 issue of the Galitzianer,
the quarterly research journal of Gesher Galicia.

This issue takes readers from the pages of index books in the Przemyśl
State Archive to the pages of the Jewish press in interwar Krakόw. It
explores the extreme measures Galician “sufferers” took to evade the
draft, whether it be abstaining from food and sleep, or even engaging
in self-mutilation. It showcases the experiences of immigrants leaving
the Galician towns of Jezierna, Dobromil, and Drohobycz, and often
ending up in the tenements of New York. Finally, it captivates us in
sweeping family sagas from both World Wars, interlaced with the
history of those challenging times.

The journal takes up all these issues in the following articles:

·         “Research Corner: The Przemyśl Identification Project” by Tony Kahane

·         “The Jewish Press in Krakow” by Geoffrey M. Weisgard

·         “Leaving Galicia: Poverty, Pogroms, and Draft Evasion” by Sharon Taylor

·         “From Jezierna to America” by Charlie Katz

·         “The Search for My Roots” by Daniel L. Fuchs

·         “My Grandfather’s Rendezvous with History” by Steve Becker

·         “My Life Was a Gift” by Andrew C.A. Jampoler
