Introductions - BERNARD, ADLER, and more #austria-czech

Hello Austria-Czech SIG:

Thank you Sharla for this promotion -- it's a great way to meet the
neighbors! And again, Thank you Celia for all your help. We are all indebted.

About a year after I retired in 1988, I "discovered" that my surname came,
not >from an unknown Frenchman, but >from a Jewish GGF -- Jacob BERNARD who was
enumerated in the 1870 US census in New Jersey -- age 40, native of Bohemia,
Dealer in Clothing. His death record in 1881 identified his parents as Abraham
and Klariena.

A Familiant record for an Abraham BERNARD and Klara (ADLER) BERNARD at Luhov
Manor 10 km. NW of Plzen was found in the Prague Archives. This record also
shows Abraham's parents Simon and Anna SAMLER (sic), his brother Bernard
BERNARD, and two of Abraham's sons -- Philipp and Simon (later called Jole),
but no Jacob. My twelve-year speculation about this being the right family was
confirmed last year when new-found cousins in Brazil (descendants of Jole BERNARD)
confirmed that Jacob was indeed another son of Abraham and Klara.

In the 1793 census, Simon BERNARD was single, living in Dorf Dollana, a
village adjacent to Rakolus (Hracholusky) where Jakob SEMLER and his two
daughters lived. Simon and Anna SEMLER were permitted to marry in 1794.

Abraham BERNARD married Klara ADLER >from Arnetsgruen in 1818. Klara's parents
were Philipp ADLER (aka Feisch Joseph) and Demut WILLNER. If we are correct,
A-C SIG member Caryn ADLER's ancestor was Moises ADLER, Klara's brother --
which makes Caryn my 4th cousin, two generations removed.

Bernard BERNARD, Flusshauspaechter in Rakolus, was permitted to marry in 1823
but whom and where?

Abraham and Klara (later Karolina) BERNARD's sons lived in Staab /Stod about
1850. Abraham applied for a pedlar's license there in 1857. The family is
mentioned in Hugo Gold's 1934 History of Staab -- See translation at Gemeindeview
under "Stod".

Philipp BERNARD married in Plzen in 1852 Caroline HOFMANN of Ullice, dau. of

Their 7 children all born in Stod/Staab:
Maria 1853 -- married Markus KOHN (no further data)
Daniel 1855-1914 -- married Pauline MUELLER in Vienna; their son
Ernst survived Buchenwald; daughters Martha and Kathe escaped to Australia;
dau. Elsa (FRANKL) and family perished at OPOLE
Jakob 1882 - 1936 -- married Berta WEIGL; their son Leo, his wife
Hedwig KRAUS and dau. Zdenka perished at Sobibor; dau. Melanie not found.
Still searching for Phillip's other children: Moises b.1860; David
Leopold 1863; Caroline 1865 and Anna 1867

Jole/Joel BERNARD married Katharina SCHLEISNER >from Ullitz, dau of Samuel and
Katherina WEIS

Their 7 children also all born in Staab / Stod:
Siegfried 1864; Carolina1866; Sofie 1867: Anna 1869; Elenore 1871;
Adelheid 1871; (no further info)
Albert b. 1874 married in Plzen Gabriela POPPER dau. of Markus and
Joanna >from Liblin in 1902. Albert and Gabriela died at Treblinka in 1942.
Their three children escaped to England and South America in 1938/39.

GGF Jacob BERNARD emigrated to St. Louis about 1850, but that's a story for
another day.

Any clues to the families waiting to be found will be sincerely appreciated.
