You can still find many marriages in NYC before 1900 as I found 1891 and 1895 on My first trip to the NYC Municipal archives for 2 great aunts in 2000. Licenses and applications didn't begin until 1908, yet they are valuable and available at the same archives. If the marriage was not registered, the license would still be there.
